I know our media tells us that Singapore is the centre of all things great and prosperous. Yesterday I was reading how we were a developed country with a developing country’s growth rate.
But to put it in perspective, Woman’s Wear Daily just published an article ranking the top ten Asian countries for retail spend. Japan blitzed it of course at $76.7 billion, but we did come in at number 10 ( $1.1 billion), about a third of the size of Malaysia and substantially less than Indonesia.
It kind of puts our media reporting in perspective I think.

I’m not a fan of the local media, but don’t forget Malaysia has a population that’s 6 times that of Singapore.
So on a per capita basis, our retail spending is actually double theirs.
