Far be it for me to make myself out to be a technology reporter. I seem to have some kind of reverse-Midas touch when it comes to gadgets, killing anything I put my hands on. Still, I always think it’s fun to have a bit of a Wow break.
If you’re one of the trillion people in the world who’s read Harry Potter your imagination has probably been fired up by the “moving picture” newspapers. It’s also the key to the Neal Stephenson book (The Diamond Age) I’m reading at the moment. Books aren’t dead, they’re just on the verge of a leap in evolution.
Ultra-thin flexible displays are the big buzz at the moment and it seems everyone is working on one, including Sony and Fujitsu. The Human Media Lab (HML) at Queens University is exploring how the new ultra-thin plastic screens might be used, combined with multi-touch input, and they’re already playing around with prototypes of foldable paper computers.
And that’s just the beginning. They expect that the technology could soon start showing up (with micro-computers) in product packaging. Something as simple as a soft drink or a cereal box could include RSS feeds and video.
The communications and branding implications of that are just mind-blowing!
