The Buddhist ritual of Seet Goh opens the gates to the underworld. While the gates are open, devotees give offerings (make merit) to loved ones who’ve recently passed over and are still in transit to their next destination.
It’s very physical, very noisy, very intense and takes several hours. It’s not unexpected for strange things to happen while this is going on, such as unexpected thunderstorms or all the electricity on the site shorting out.
