I live in an area in Singapore that’s fast becoming a tourist attraction, so I appreciate the difficulty some Cambodians must have carrying on their daily lives surrounded by travelers. We all think of the UNESCO heritage area of Siem Reap as a photo opportunity, but there’s plenty of evidence when you visit that they are still living, breathing temples. They’re probably not the regular shrines that anyone living in Siem Reap uses, but if you were a “local tourist”, coming from elsewhere in Cambodia, they have a significance beyond their beauty. This lady is a caretaker at Angkor Wat. She helps anyone that is there to use the temples for their original purpose.
